Equipment Classes

These sessions really assist both beginners and more advanced clients to get the most out of their Pilates - ensuring that you get the exact level of workout you require and opening up a whole new and exciting aspect of your Pilates Practice (maximum of 5 participants per session)

Using the Big Equipment gives you increased support and awareness, enabling you to get a distinct defined feel for each movement, assisting you to execute each one perfectly, while gradually building up your strength and flexibility to take on the harder mat exercises.

The Pilates Cadillac - sometimes nicknamed "the torture table" because of the look of various attachments and the frame which surrounds the table! - is a piece of apparatus that offers more than 80 exercises (plus variations) based on spring resistance.

Benefits of exercising with the Cadillac include:

  • strengthening the core muscles
  • developing spinal flexibility
  • toning of the shoulders, back and other muscles
  • helps to make the existing mat exercises more challenging

The Reformer makes a dramatic impression when you first see one, and an even more dramatic change in the body when you use it.

The Tower is attached to some Reformers mimicking part of the Cadillac.

So what makes the Reformer so special?

The crux is in the gliding platform on wheels, on which you can sit, kneel, stand or lie on your front, back or side. The platform is attached to a different number of springs which provide variable resistance, allowing clients to slowly build up strength and flexibility.


Benefits of exercising with the Reformer and Reformer with Tower include:

  • promoting length, strength, flexibility and balance
  • postural alignment
  • excellent core stability
  • increased overall muscle awareness

Benefits of exercising with the Wunda Chair include:

  • improves balance whether sitting, standing, or lying on the chair
  • improves posture through pelvic and scapular stabilization exercises
  • works spinal flexion and extension
  • increases strength, lean muscle tissue and, in turn, metabolic function

Also known as the 'Step Barrel', this popular piece of equipment is designed to focus on the core abdominal, back, and shoulder muscles.

Specially conformed to the natural curvature of the spine, the barrel shape allows the user to gently stretch the lumbar, thoracic and cervical vertebrae, making it beneficial for those with both upper and lower body pain.


Benefits of exercising with the Pilates Spine Corrector include:

  • stretches the core muscles
  • builds flexibility, endurance, co-ordination and muscle tone
  • releases spinal tension and relaxes the entire body

It consists of ladder-like rungs and a rounded barrel-like surface on which a multitude of stretching, strengthening and flexibility exercises can be performed.

Benefits of exercising with the Ladder Barrel include:

  • isolating deep postural muscles
  • challenges the body on all planes of movement

Jumping against springs (when attached to the Reformer).

You can lie down and jump against the springs to get your heart rate up without any jarring to the ankles, knees, and lower back.

You can also jump in the side-lying position on one leg and the work is focused into the glutes - excellent for a peach perfect derriere!

Benefits of exercising with the Jump Board include:

  • improved strength
  • increased bone density (without the risk of falling or over-balancing)

Recent scientific research has concluded that jumping is possibly the most effective exercise because of its effect on our lymph systems. The bouncing motion moves and recycles the lymph and moves the blood supply through the body many times during the workout, helping to de-toxify the system.

More interesting news is that jumping/rebounding as exercise has been studied by the space agency NASA and found to be 68% more oxygen efficient than other forms of exercise. This means that you can exercise quite vigorously without feeling out of breath, but still gain the same benefits you would from jogging, but without the impact on your joints. A win-win situation if ever there was one!

I have been studying with Linda on a regular weekly basis for the past few years with the small equipment Pilates.
With every class Linda guides you expertly & safely through a specially choreographed session always ending with a delicious relaxation when your body 'sings' with the Pilates fizz! I have now felt confident enough to start working in Linda's beautifully stylish Pilates big equipment studio and once again with Linda's expert tuition, support and guidance, it's an experience not to missed!

I came to see Linda following a long period of injury that had kept me away from my running and triathlon activities. I’d tried massage, stretching, physiotherapy, podiatry (and numerous exercises from the internet!), but even though these all helped, they never quite got to the root of things and I began to lose faith that I’d ever get back to doing the sports that I really enjoyed. After a recommendation from a friend I thought I’d give pilates a try and since that first session with Linda, I’ve never looked back. Linda has been fantastic at identifying what I need to work on as an individual and how best to go about it in order to address my specific issues I’m continually learning from Linda about how my body works and finding out how to improve my strength and flexibility, not only throughout my core, but also throughout my whole body. Crucially for me, I’ve recovered from my injuries and now if I feel a niggle after running or cycling, I know what to do to address it. Pilates has been a real eye-opener for me and I can’t thank Linda enough for helping me back to full fitness … being able to put on my trainers and go for a run in the countryside is a real joy and wonderful to be able to do again!

LINDA

I first came into contact with Pilates in 1985 and found that this form of exercise completely encapsulated all my beliefs about fitness, the Mind Body connection and the ensuing ongoing health of both body and mind.

Previously, I had trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (LGSM) in London, which inspired further my innate love of dance and movement. This lead me to explore different forms of exercise and movement, which included achieving an Aerobics Instructor qualification.

On discovering Pilates, I studied to become a Pilates Instructor, completing an apprenticeship at Wayne Sleep's Studios in London and working with Gordon Thompson (later of Body Control Pilates fame). I then instructed at Wayne's studio, and at other London studios, until moving to Devon in 1994. In 1993 I undertook further training with the Pilates Institute, to become an Instructor Member of the Pilates Institute.

My Diploma in Counselling qualification and ongoing trainings informs and underlines my belief that as Joseph Pilates said:

"It is the mind itself that shapes the body"
and that:
"Your biography becomes your biology"

I regularly attend Master Classes and further trainings in London, Spain and USA making sure that I am in touch with all the latest research into Pilates, and most importantly to challenge my own Pilates Practise!

"Pilates for Life is an unending Journey - it is not the arrival that is important but how the journey is conducted and experienced that matters."


KIRSTIN

My journey into Pilates started because I had, from the age of 19, inherent back problems which would regularly disable me for a week at a time! Therefore, when Linda suggested that I start Pilates during my first pregnancy (2002) it seemed a very sensible thing to do.

I really enjoyed the Pilates Matwork sessions and quickly realised that it was making a significant difference to the strength of my back. I continued doing Pilates right up to the birth of my eldest daughter. Pilates now is an essential part of my life both for body, mind and spirit; as I teach full time in an International School and have two children my life is very busy and demanding.

Because of my personal experience of the enormous benefits of Pilates and my enjoyment of this form of exercise, I trained with the Pilates Institute, qualifying as a Pilates Instructor in 2008.

I absolutely love Pilates and really enjoy instructing my classes, working on new choreography and seeing the positive differences that Pilates makes in people's lives. I teach all levels of Pilates - which also includes a class for men! I continuously work on updating my technique, continuing to study all areas of Pilates and am currently in the process of training to teach children (5 - 16) through SmartyPilates
